My name is Luke Hazard. I release art under the name Ourson. Currently, I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, where the Shenandoah river meets the Potomac. The music I work on under the Ourson guise is an effort to unearth deep seeded feelings of nostalgia, deja-vu and other brain trickery, for myself and whoever else may be listening. I have been exploring this craft for over 12 years now.
My method involves a great deal of improvisation and blind luck, letting my fascination with the unknown lead the way. I collect outdated tape players, radios, televisions and other various antiques to fashion my work. I rarely use traditional musical instruments as Ourson, though I am quite fond of them. I've many bands and collaborative efforts where more traditional and not so traditional recordings are made. I am very big into raw EXPERIMENTATION; often finding strange ways to impliment and manipulate household devices to create mysterious, unrecognizeable sounds. The name Ourson bears many meanings. I came up with it while living in Manhattan, New York after completing my first ambient album (Warming Plant) intended as a gift for my parents from their son. Additionally, the french term "L'ourson" (bear cub, or little bear) applies to me on an abstract level for I have throughout my childhood perceived my father as an enormous Grizzly Bear. The name Ourson connotes many spiritual and religious symbols as the Son of God, or the life giving Star of Our Earth, the Sun. |
